While the “tweets” discuss our day-to-day lives in Flagstaff, like tackling one of the biggest snow storms on Flagstaff record, they also reflect that people appreciate the work Sara and the City of Flagstaff do for their community.

Social media gives residents a platform to share in an open forum that never would have been possible just five years ago.  We all have busy lives and we don’t always have time to be part of the democratic process in other ways…like running to a city council meeting, attending a debate or meeting with the mayor in person.

It’s clear over the last year Flagstaff wants to be part of the new media process and appreciates a “hands-on innovative” mayor. They share their ideas and thoughts and Sara listens and responds. Many ideas resulting to improving our quality of life in Flagstaff.

My mission is to lead with care, integrity, and transparency.  Before I took office, the average citizen’s interests were taking a back seat to second-home owners and special interests. I ran for Mayor to make sure working families had a strong voice at the table.

The past year was financially challenging for Flagstaff, the nation, and many of you. In 2009, The City of Flagstaff alone faced a $13 million dollar deficit.

Working for you and with my dedicated colleagues on the council, we put together many proposals and bid for federal funds. I went to Washington D.C. to represent Flagstaff’s bid and had the good fortune to cooperatively bring home over $10 million dollars in federal funding.

Here are some of the other highlighted accomplishments that took place during 2009 that we can all be proud of:

• Maintained Northern Arizona Center for Emerging Technologies during fiscal budget cuts; establishing 11 new companies and creating 80 high-paying jobs
• Implemented City government reorganization and balanced the budget
• Maintained vital patrol officer and firefighter positions in spite of big budget cuts
• Created the Mayor’s Symphony Program:  Mentoring Through Music to enhance cultural education for our children and youth

About 13,000 households in Coconino County were told to go to the wrong polling place on their state elections pamphlet due to an error by a contractor working for the state.

This includes many in Flagstaff.

Polls for the May 18 election have been consolidated to fewer locations to save money, but the contractor printing the information pulled from the wrong, bigger list of voting locations.

Voters and households who got the wrong address can expect to receive a postcard in the mail after May 5 giving the correct location to vote, paid for by the contractor.

Or, a voter can pull out their county-provided “voter identification card,” look for the precinct (”pct”), and can find the correct polling place in the list included here.

City of Flagstaff voter information packets had the correct polling places; but some state ones did not.

Decisions on Flagstaff’s mayor, three city council seats and a statewide sales tax increase are among the questions up for consideration in this election.

Citing voter registration numbers that exceed 3,000 for some Flagstaff polling places, Coconino County Elections officials said polls could be busy on May 18, and are urging voters to request an early ballot before May 7 — the last day they’re available.

Voters can also vote early in person at the Coconino County Elections office through May 14, at 110 E. Cherry Avenue in Flagstaff.

For the future, there is also a “permanent early voter” list, where voters can request in writing to have all ballots they qualify to vote on mailed to them automatically.

Dear Friend or Family Member,

I am writing you this letter to ask you for help with the upcoming election in Flagstaff. If you are a voting citizen of the City of Flagstaff, please listen. If you have the ear of someone who is a voting citizen in the City of Flagstaff, please listen and bend their ear.

On May 18th, the citizens of Flagstaff will cast their vote on four very important issues:

Prop 400—Extension of the City’s 1% ($0.01) Sales Tax
Prop 401—Extension of the City’s 2% ($0.02) “BBB” Tax
Prop 402—Agreement to the 25 year A.P.S. Franchise Fee
Prop 403—City of Flagstaff’s Meet and Confer Ordinance

The “Protect Flagstaff’s Future” coalition is asking for your help is supporting ALL 4 of these propositions. Taxes will not be increased with any of these props, and they ensure that the city budget, in this unprecedented economic time, will not be slashed any more than it has been. Programs and departments will continue to receive much needed funding and city employees and services will continue at the high level they operate at today.

HATE WAITING IN LONG LINES OR TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHICH POLLING PLACE IS THE RIGHT ONE?

Now through May 14th, you can vote early for the May 18th Flagstaff General Election at the Coconino County Elections office, located at 110 E Cherry Street.

To vote visit the elections office in person between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. They will ask you a few questions to confirm your ID (you should bring ID too, just in case) and then they’ll hand you a ballot to vote. You can fill in the ballot right there and return it to the clerk. Voila…You’re done.

Benefits of Voting Early:

* Super convenient and fast
* Avoid potential problems on election day – wrong polling place, long lines, ID issues.
* You always think you’ll have time to vote on Election Day, but you never know when a scheduling conflict may arise.
* You still get a “I Voted” sticker. Keep it around until election day and wear it then too.
